Buiten de super gave lustrummaand, wordt er in de voorjaarsvakantie van 2013 nog een studiereis neergezet. Deze reis heeft de naam THUNDER en heeft als bestemming Engeland. Het thema van de reis is ‘The Connected World’ en dit geeft dan ook aan wat voor soort bedrijven er worden bezocht. Engeland heeft veel innoverende bedrijven rondom dit thema. De reis zal hieronder kort worden toegelicht.
Tijdens de reis wordt er met een touringcar gereisd en de
eerste bestemming is London. Hier zullen Vodafone en BAE Systems bezocht
worden. Vodafone is bij iedereen uiteraard bekend via de telecommunicatie
industrie en is toonaangevend in deze branche. BAE Systems, een groot bedrijf
in Engeland dat zich specialiseert in defensie en beveiliging, is een van de
grootste defensie bedrijven van de wereld. Verder wordt er in London ook de
Faculteit Electrical Engineering van het University College London bezocht,
waar de studenten de verschillen en overeenkomsten kunnen zien tussen studeren
in London en in Eindhoven.
Na het bezoek in London zal er via het bedrijf Oclaro naar Cambridge worden gereisd. Oclaro fabriceert optische en laser componenten voor telecommunicatie, consumenten elektronica en medische apparatuur. Cambridge staat bekend om zijn universiteit, University of Cambridge, die goede contacten heeft met onze faculteit en deze universiteit wordt tijdens de reis uiteraard bezocht.
Naast de University of Cambridge zitten er bekende bedrijven in de buurt die ook bezocht zullen worden, namelijk NVIDIA, ARM en Broadcom. NVIDIA, bekend van de grafische kaarten in pc’s, heeft veel inzicht in high-performance multithreaded processing. Daarnaast moet alleprocessing tegenwoordig parallel en omdat Nvidia hierin een grote speler is, zal een excursie naar NVIDIA erg interssant zijn. ARM, een internationaal halfgeleider en software bedrijf, is misschien minder bekend bij de meeste mensen. Echter zit er tegenwoordig in vrijwel elke smartphone een ARM architectuur, dus is ARM van groot belang in onze Connected World. De laatste bedrijfsexcursie vindt plaats naar Broadcom, een bedrijf dat zich specialiseert in draadloze en breedband communicatie. Omdat vrijwel tegenwoordig draadloos moet, is een excursie naar Broadcom een leuke toevoeging aan de reis.

Next to this super cool month with lustrum activities, a study tour is organized during the spring break in 2013. The name of this study tour is THUNDER and has England as its destination. ‘The Connected World’ is the theme and this indicates what kind of companies will be visited. There are lots of innovative companies that fit this theme in England. The tour is explained below in more detail.
We travel by coach through England and our first destination is London. The companies Vodafone and BAE Systems will be
visited here. Everyone knows Vodafone from the telecommunications industry en
it is leading in its business. BAE Systems, a large defense and security
enterprise, is one of the largest of its kind around the world. Furthermore the
Department of Electrical Engineering of the University College London is a part
of the tour’s program. This allows the students to see the differences
and similarities between studying in London and in Eindhoven.
After the visit in London the journey continues via Oclaro to Cambridge. Oclaro fabricates optical and laser components for telecommunications, consumer electronics and medical devices. Cambridge in known for its university, the University of Cambridge which has good contacts with our department, and a visit to this university is naturally part of the tour.
Besides the University of Cambridge there are other interesting companies in Cambridge, namely NVIDIA, ARM and Broadcom. NVIDIA, known for its graphics cards in personal computers, has a lot of insight into high-performance multithreaded processing. Next to that, because all processing has to be done in parallel these days (and is done multithreaded or multi-core) and NVIDIA is a big player in this field of industry, it is thus very interesting to visit NVIDIA. ARM, a multinational semiconductor and software development company, may be less known by most people. Nevertheless, almost every smartphone has an ARM architecture in it making ARM of great importance in our Connected World. The last company excursion is to Broadcom, a company that specializes in wireless and broadband communication. Any type of communication should be wireless these days, so adding the expertise of Broadcom to this tour is a good complement to the other excursions.
